> How to Shuck an Oyster
Preparation: Before shucking, scrub the shell with a stiff vegetable
brush and rinse under cold water. This will keep loose dirt from getting
on the meat. To protect your hands, use a towel to hold the oyster steady
in case the knife slips or the shell cracks.

How
To Shuck An Oyster |
| Step 1: Drape your open palm in the towel then hold the
oyster firmly in that hand, have your knife in the other.
Slip the knife blade between the top and bottom shell right
by the hinge on the back. |
| Step 2: Run the knife all the way around the oyster until
you get to the other side. This isn't as easy as it sounds,
so take your time if you're a beginner. |
| Step 3: Using a twisting motion, pry the top and bottom
shells apart. Be firm, but make sure you don't lose any of
the liquor inside. |
| Step 4: Cut the oyster free from it's shell. It'll be connected
by a tough knob on it's underside; slide your knife under
and sever it. Depending on how you are eating them decides
your next move. If you are eating them raw, put on your favorite
condiment and enjoy. If you are cooking them, keep in mind
some recipes call for the liquor inside. Enjoy!! |
